A consultation on division boundaries for Worcestershire has begun
/in News /by Roger
Today is the start of a ten-week public consultation inviting proposals for new council divisions and division boundaries for Worcestershire County Council. Our consultation will close on 24 July 2023. After we have considered all representations made to us during this consultation, we intend to publish draft recommendations in October 2023. We will then hold a further period of consultation on our draft recommendations. Our final recommendations are expected to be published in May 2024. The new electoral arrangements will come into effect at the local elections in May 2025.
What is an electoral review? Our electoral review will recommend new electoral arrangements for Worcestershire. We will propose: · the total number of councillors elected to the council in the future; · the number of divisions; · the number of councillors representing each division; · division boundaries; and · the names of divisions.
How to get involved This is a public consultation and we welcome views from individuals and organisations across Worcestershire on where they think new division boundaries should be drawn. We are minded to recommend that 57 councillors should be elected to Worcestershire County Council in the future. This is no change from the current number of councillors. We are now inviting proposals to help us draw up a pattern of divisions to accommodate 57 councillors. In drawing up new electoral divisions, we must balance three legal criteria, namely: · to deliver electoral equality: where each councillor represents roughly the same number of electors as others across the county; · that the pattern of divisions should, as far as possible, reflect the interests and identities of local communities; · that the electoral arrangements should provide for effective and convenient local government. We will treat all submissions equally, and judge each case on its merits and against the legal criteria. If you wish to put forward a view, we would also urge you to ensure that evidence supports your submission. For example, if you wish to argue that two areas should be included in the same electoral division, make sure you tell us why they should be together, providing evidence about community facilities, ties, organisations, and amenities, rather than simply asserting that they belong together. There is more advice on our website about how you can get involved in the consultation. Our website features technical guidance that explains the process and our policies, as well as guidance on how to take part in each part of the process. We have also set up a webpage dedicated to the review of Worcestershire, where you can find all the relevant information. You can also access interactive maps of the current ward boundaries across Worcestershire on our website. The portal also allows you to comment and upload documents directly to the site.

On Sunday 23 April 2023, there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts service.
/in News /by RogerOn Sunday 23 April 2023, there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts service.
Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby.
In an emergency, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe.
The government does not need to know your phone number or location to send you an alert.
Reasons you might get an alert
You may get alerts about:
- severe flooding
- fires
- extreme weather
Emergency alerts will only be sent by:
- the emergency services
- government departments, agencies and public bodies that deal with emergencies
What happens when you get an emergency alert
Your mobile phone or tablet may:
- make a loud siren-like sound, even if it’s set on silent
- vibrate
- read out the alert
The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds.
An alert will include a phone number or a link to the GOV.UK website for more information.
You’ll get alerts based on your current location – not where you live or work. You do not need to turn on location services to receive alerts.
What you need to do
When you get an alert, stop what you’re doing and follow the instructions in the alert.
If you’re driving or riding when you get an alert
- You should not read or otherwise respond to an emergency alert whilst driving or riding a motorcycle.
- If you are driving, you should continue to drive and not respond to the noise or attempt to pick up the mobile phone and deal with the message.
- Find somewhere safe and legal to stop before reading the message. If there is nowhere safe or legal to stop close by, and nobody else is in the vehicle to read the alert, tune into live radio and wait for bulletins until you can find somewhere safe and legal to stop.
It is illegal to use a hand-held device while driving or riding.
If you cannot receive emergency alerts
If you do not have a compatible device, you’ll still be informed about an emergency. The emergency services have other ways to warn you when there is a threat to life.
Emergency alerts will not replace local news, radio, television or social media.
If you’re deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted
If you have a vision or hearing impairment, audio and vibration attention signals will let you know you have an emergency alert.
Alert languages
Emergency alerts will be sent in English. In Wales, they may also be sent in Welsh.

Electricity pylon upgrade in Astley & Dunley affecting Dark Lane (from A451), B4196 & C2239
/in News /by RogerOn behalf of National Grid formerly Western Power Distribution, the electricity Distribution Network Operator, regarding access to electricity pylons at Astley.
As part of our essential asset replacement and improvement program, National Grid is replacing the electrical conductors, insulators and fittings on this pylon line. This work is necessary to ensure the ongoing performance and reliability of the electricity network. The work is being carried out by our principle contractor “Wood Plc”.
In order to carry out this work we will require vehicular access to all of the pylons. We are taking this opportunity to notify residents in the area.
In order to access the pylons in Astley we will be using Dark Lane (from A451), B4196 & C2239 as shown on the plan below. As the lanes narrow and there are limited passing places we would greatly appreciate your consideration while using the lanes. We appreciate this may cause you some inconvenience and we’ll do our best to minimise disruption.
We will limit vehicle movements on Dark Lane and School Lane to between 9am and 2.30pm to avoid disruption to residents dropping off / picking up children from Astley Primary School.
These works will not affect your electricity supply.
Should you have any concerns regarding the works, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 01905 383103.
The works are due to commence on this section in March and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete. The works will finished by the end of May.
