On Sunday 23 April 2023, there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts service.

Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby.

In an emergency, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe.

The government does not need to know your phone number or location to send you an alert.

Reasons you might get an alert

You may get alerts about:

  • severe flooding
  • fires
  • extreme weather

Emergency alerts will only be sent by:

  • the emergency services
  • government departments, agencies and public bodies that deal with emergencies

What happens when you get an emergency alert

Your mobile phone or tablet may:

  • make a loud siren-like sound, even if it’s set on silent
  • vibrate
  • read out the alert

The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds.

An alert will include a phone number or a link to the GOV.UK website for more information.

You’ll get alerts based on your current location – not where you live or work. You do not need to turn on location services to receive alerts.

What you need to do

When you get an alert, stop what you’re doing and follow the instructions in the alert.

If you’re driving or riding when you get an alert

  • You should not read or otherwise respond to an emergency alert whilst driving or riding a motorcycle.
  • If you are driving, you should continue to drive and not respond to the noise or attempt to pick up the mobile phone and deal with the message.
  • Find somewhere safe and legal to stop before reading the message. If there is nowhere safe or legal to stop close by, and nobody else is in the vehicle to read the alert, tune into live radio and wait for bulletins until you can find somewhere safe and legal to stop.

It is illegal to use a hand-held device while driving or riding.

If you cannot receive emergency alerts

If you do not have a compatible device, you’ll still be informed about an emergency. The emergency services have other ways to warn you when there is a threat to life.

Emergency alerts will not replace local news, radio, television or social media.

If you’re deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted

If you have a vision or hearing impairment, audio and vibration attention signals will let you know you have an emergency alert.

Alert languages

Emergency alerts will be sent in English. In Wales, they may also be sent in Welsh.

Electricity pylon upgrade in Astley & Dunley affecting Dark Lane (from A451), B4196 & C2239

On behalf of National Grid formerly Western Power Distribution, the electricity Distribution Network Operator, regarding access to electricity pylons at Astley.

As part of our essential asset replacement and improvement program, National Grid is replacing the electrical conductors, insulators and fittings on this pylon line. This work is necessary to ensure the ongoing performance and reliability of the electricity network. The work is being carried out by our principle contractor “Wood Plc”.

In order to carry out this work we will require vehicular access to all of the pylons. We are taking this opportunity to notify residents in the area.

In order to access the pylons in Astley we will be using Dark Lane (from A451), B4196 & C2239 as shown on the plan below. As the lanes narrow and there are limited passing places we would greatly appreciate your consideration while using the lanes. We appreciate this may cause you some inconvenience and we’ll do our best to minimise disruption.

We will limit vehicle movements on Dark Lane and School Lane to between 9am and 2.30pm to avoid disruption to residents dropping off / picking up children from Astley Primary School.

These works will not affect your electricity supply.

Should you have any concerns regarding the works, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 01905 383103.

The works are due to commence on this section in March and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete. The works will finished by the end of May.

Save The Bell at Pensax – Survey

SAVE THE BELL- PENSAX

As you may know, The Bell at Pensax closed its doors in the autumn and was put up for sale. A group of local residents have got together to try and ensure that The Bell, which has been a pub for over 150 years, re-opens as a pub and vital community venue. So far, this group has secured an ‘ACV’ which classifies the pub as an Asset of Community Value and also started a Facebook Group which can be joined here  https://www.facebook.com/groups/savethebellatpensax

It would be a huge help in planning next steps for a possible community bid for The Bell if local residents could take two minutes to complete a short survey by following this link http://bit.ly/savethebell

The community has a tight timeframe in which they must indicate if they wish to make an offer for the pub and as such it would be desirable to get responses to the survey by Friday 20 January 2023. The results will be published (at an anonymous level only) and presented at a public meeting where the proposal can be discussed further.

Many thanks for your help!
